A pre-alert, affecting the southern areas of all of the islands, has been issued by local agencies.
The Eastern Islands, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will have already experienced the claggy skies created by the Calima, as it moves it's way west across all the islands.
"
The Calima is thought not to be severe and should clear within a day.
What is Calima?
When Saharan Air hits the Canary Islands it often brings with it sand, which can create a strange orange glow in the sky (and all over the white properties on the island). This phenomenom is known as Calima.
Is Calima dangerous?
Calimas are not generally a health risk to fit and active individuals, however the increase of PM10 particles created by the event can pose a health risk to people with chronic or respiratory diseases. It is advised to avoid over strenuous activities and stay indoors if you feel the Calima might effect your breathing.
It is not uncommon for Calimas to bring an increase in temperature, so remember to stay hydrated.
