A recent survey by the Canarian Institute of Statistics has shown that 3 out of 4 holidaymakers would be happy to pay a tourist tax of around 1 to 3 Euros per day when visiting the Islands.
The Survey, conducted throughout the 2nd Quarter of 2024 showed that 76.5% of visitors to the Canary Islands would be happy to pay a tourist tax to visit the archipelago.
The nation least accepting of the fee was the Irish with 29.3% saying they would holiday elsewhere if the Tourist Tax was introduced. 27.5% of visitors from the Peninsular also had negative views on the idea.
The idea behind the charge would be to help to protect the natural areas of the islands that, in the opinions of many, are becoming over run and ruined by tourists and that funds raised could be also be potentially put towards improving living conditions for the locals.
Tenerife has already announced a new 'Ecotax' that it will apply to tourists from 1st January 2025 and charged to Tourists who visit certain beauty spots and natural reserves on the island.
